It has been 100 years since the infamous singer/pianist/composer Pauline Viardot (née García) passed away and 200 years since the great Robert Schumann was born. How do the two intersect? For one, Mme. Viardot was a close girlfriend of Schumann’s wife Clara. And Brahms, close friend of both Herr und Frau Schumann, persuaded her to sing in the first performance of his Alto Rhapsody. We are thrilled that these two figures will meet on the Off Centre stage in a simultaneous Commemoration/Birthday bash “attended” by the likes of Clara Schumann, Brahms, Mendelssohn and Chopin. Hosting the “party” are our very own Inna Perkis and Boris Zarankin, soprano Shannon Mercer, mezzo Wallis Giunta and violinist Marie Bérard.
